The Staron Design Award judges of Stephen Varady of Stephen Varady Architecture and Amanda Stanaway of Woods Bagot have decided on the winners of the Staron Design Awards 2017. With competition as fierce as this, the winners are particularly noteworthy, and incredibly well deserving.
The Commercial winner is Lee Hardcastle of Enigma Interiors for his outstanding design work on the Triple Eight Race Engineering Workshop in Brisbane, Queensland.
The design criteria of this project called for materials that would create the cleanliness of a laboratory in a high rotation multipurpose room. The concept was to redefine and modernise the traditional ‘greasy workshop’ into a high tech engineering room that would be a place to repair and maintain important race vehicles. Staron Solid Surfaces was selected for the long benchtops that circulate the large workshop in colour Aspen Snow, as it provided a clean and smooth finish with no open joins. The benchtops continue up the wall into splashbacks for a totally integrated finish that abolishes any dirt trapping crevices.

Mark Gacesa of Ultraspace is the Residential winner of the 2017 Staron Design Awards, being recognised for his outstanding design on an exclusive home on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Mark designed the ‘Art House’ using a selection of hand picked materials to create a luxurious look and feel throughout including the bathroom spaces.
In the master bathroom an origami inspired double vanity replicates a work of art. Made with Staron in colour Pebble Frost and back lit, the surface illuminates to create impact. The apron fronts of the vanity wrap around the oversized ostrich hide drawers and fold back in on themselves. The inside of the basin features Staron in Quasar White and folds down from the vanity surface with a rectangle of light peeking through the smart wastes. The addition of dimmable illumination from these surfaces also provides a beautiful and soft atmosphere.
The lower main bathroom of the Art House has a luxury spa feel. The custom vanity top is made entirely with Staron in colour Quasar White and folds back in on itself on the front apron and down from the vanity surface with a rectangular shape that continues the origami inspired design.

Jason Partel and Ariya Phathanachindakit of RAL Architects are the Concept winners of the Staron Design Awards. Jason and Ariya have been recognised for their concept design of a reception unit for a head of school science faculty using Staron in colour Dazzling White. The concept design features Staron on the front of the reception cabinetry. The material in the concept has been sculpted, routered and backlit, to create a detailed pattern. As a nod to the faculties scientific endeavours, hexagonal motifs are embedded in the material of the surface as an interpretation of the building blocks of structures within nature and scientific formula. To further accentuate the idea of natural forms within the scientific environment it is proposed to build up depth within the Staron in certain areas. Combining timber into the design next to Staron, adds a touch of warmth to the design.
