Exhibition explores the traditional designer/maker relationship with wood

Part of the recent Sydney Design 09 program, Design + Wood 2009 explored the work of contemporary furniture designers who retain traditional workshop-based production processes.

Showcasing the most exquisite wooden furniture pieces, made from a diverse range of Australian native timers, the exhibition welcomed both established and emerging designer/makers.

The exhibition captured the unique detailing and raw attributes of the material, so often lost in large-scale production.

Two awards were given at the opening night, recognising the fine craftsmanship, beauty and attention to detail of two pieces:

– The Forests NSW Award for Design & Craftsmanship was presented to Nick Statham for his intricate wood joinery and was judged by Brian Parkes, Assistant Director at Object.

– The Award for Fine Woodwork, judged by Leon Sadubin, was presented to John Gallagher for his wood and glass cabinet.’¨’¨

The exhibition was a great success and highlighted the continued appreciation within design of traditional craftsmanship and production techniques.
