Brisbane Open House lures urban explorers

Brisbane’s architectural wonders will be showcased at the sixth annual Brisbane Open House, when the city extends an open invitation to explorers keen to sample a line-up of buildings over the weekend of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October 2015.
Providing visitors with the rare opportunity to discover a wealth of architecturally diverse, well-designed and historic buildings in Brisbane, Brisbane Open House is a free cultural event that raises awareness of the value of good design.
With close to 100 buildings of historic and modern architectural importance included in the program, a selection of these will be opened for the public with guided and self-guided tours to encourage them to explore, re-examine and engage with Brisbane’s built environment – opening eyes and minds to good design and curious spaces.
A vast array of historic and contemporary buildings will be unlocked for visitors, and 30 buildings will be participating in the event for the first time. Some buildings that will be open to the public include Archerfield Airport, the Brisbane General Post Office (GPO), UQ Oral Health building, Queensland Emergency Operations Centre, Brisbane City Council’s Spring Hill Service Reservoirs, Roma Street Station Heritage Building, Fernberg (Government House) and Hobbs Park.
Brisbane Open House visitors will also have the opportunity to learn more about the participating buildings thanks to some of the city’s most respected architects holding special guided tours.
Queensland Government Architect Malcolm Middleton said the event allows people to explore the city’s unique built environment, discover its abundant history and uncover well-kept secrets. “Brisbane Open House tells Brisbane’s story – from our rich history, to how we live, work and play, to the future design and development of the city – by giving people the opportunity to discover some of Brisbane’s most loved and admired buildings, infrastructure and urban landscapes,” Mr Middleton said.
This year, the Brisbane Development Association Brisbane Open House Speaker Series will also host five free talks throughout September and early October discussing a range of interesting topics including the built environment, creative spaces, Art Deco and more.
