Australians Win at World Architecture Festival

The World Architecture Festival took place in Barcelona between 2 and 4 November, with 2 Australian projects taking out prizes in their nominated categories.
As always, there was a strong Australian contingent at this year’s World Architecture Festival, the annual meeting of architects presenting over 700 projects from 59 countries.
Kurilpa Bridge by Cox Rayner took out the Transport category.
Kurilpa Bridge was based upon the principles of ’tensegrity’ – a system of isolated components in compression and tension – the world’s largest structure employing these principles. The structure was designed in collaboration with Arup and links the Brisbane CBD to the city’s Arts precinct.

Domenic Alvaro’s Small House, a compact vertical house in Sydney’s Surry Hills won the House category.
Situated on a site that, as the architect describes, is so small it can fit into the garage of a typical sprawling suburban home, Small House demonstrates the potential of building upwards rather than outwards, with flexible spaces that can be used in different ways.
