A new studio space to support emerging Western Australian artists has just opened.

Artsource – a group supporting Western Australian artists – will be opening the 18-space studio to accommodate artists of the City of Swan and surrounding suburbs.

“There is a lot of action in Midland at the moment – the Midland Redevelopment Authority has been very active in encouraging a regeneration strategy that includes creative industries,” Marketing Manager Carola Akindele-Obe says.

“There is a conscious move in the area to use the arts, design and crafts as a catalyst for change, economic and community engagement. Artists and designers are known to bring vibrancy and colour to jaded areas.”

An early 20th century building, Connolly’s Building, has been converted to house the new studio space.

Emerging artists will be able to rent out space from Connolly’s Building, a converted “rabbit warren”, in 5-year leases to develop a more sustainable art practice.

One of the residents, designer and artist Jessica Jubb, says the combined workspace and shop front has presented new opportunities for her.

“With 18 people in the studio, people can come and see how things are made and view the complete process,” she says.

It will also allow her to exhibit her different designs – from jewellery display to full installations – in one space.

“It’s a full experience all in the one place,” she says.
