Art Imitates Light

Hamish Little and Matt Hicks are the owners of Lightproject – treating lighting as art.
Growing up in a house adjoining a lighting factory seems to have sealed the destiny of Hamish Little, co-owner of lighting company Lightproject. “Much like The Godfather classic line: ‘I try to get out… but they pull me back in’,” he jokes.
Far from trying to escape the world of lighting, Little and his partner, Matt Hicks, established a sales and distribution company providing specialised lighting products and supplying leading European architectural lighting brands.
Lightproject focuses on LED products, especially new solutions in LED technology. “We really identified an opportunity for an independent lighting company not bound by corporate ownership to incorporate new technology as a key component rather than a tack-on reactive product inclusion,” Little says.
Both Little and Hicks try to keep a ‘lightness’ to their work. “All too often, companies are bound by traditional paradigms that inevitably lose the vitality that such an interesting design facet like lighting offers. Lighting is an art-based discipline,” Little says.
“If you maintain professionalism and creativity in its delivery, the result can be far more interesting than that offered by the traditional suit and tie salesman.”
When not working on lighting solutions, Little and Hicks are founders and active members of Guerrilla Lighting, an experimental lighting based movement that installs temporary lighting in urban environments such as churches and bridges.
