For more than three decades, Australian rug company Designer Rugs has continually led an innovative approach by seeking out local artists and designers to collaborate with.
The most recent design collaboration to be released with award-winning, Sydney-based studio Hare & Klein. The new range marks the second time the two brands have worked together, and both occasions have resulted in an outstanding collection of luxury hand-knotted rugs.
When reflecting on the first collection to be created, Yosi Tal, managing director of Designer Rugs shares, “The first range by Hare & Klein in 2014 became an instant success. The subtlety of both ranges is its strength. The textures and colours are more reminiscent of abstract paintings on canvas, crafted by hand from silk, hemp and wool in place of oil paint and raw canvas.”
The range is versatile and can be used in all kinds of interiors – from traditional to contemporary. The designs have been crafted to create a textural quality, showcasing abstract concepts and patterns. For the colour palette, Hare & Klein has gone with neutrals tones such as smoky charcoals, then paired with more vibrant and deeper hues.
The approach that Hare & Klein took to creating this new range is in the same vein as its own interior projects – a slow build-up of layers to ensure an authentic and warm outcome.
“We have applied our philosophy of timeless design to the new collection of rugs. They are hand knotted and will last for many years, so the designs, which are mostly abstract, employ a combination of materials such as Tibetan wool, hemp and silk, and range of colours that will complement both classic and contemporary interiors as well as many furnishing styles,” says Meryl Hare, principal, Hare & Klein.
Opening up about the way her studio integrates rugs, Meryl says, “We use rugs in our interiors to define spaces, create visual impact, add texture and introduce colour. A well-placed rug can ‘hold’ together a seating area, making it more comfortable and intimate. Sometimes we choose round, oval or rectangular rugs depending on the shape of a room.”
At the end of the day, this range would not have been possible without a shared vision and mutual respect for the craft of making luxurious rugs, “Our collaboration with Designer Rugs has been a pleasure as we shared the same vision, to create a range of rugs that were textured, tactile and artisan,” says Meryl.
The latest collection is a testament to do design brands working together for a beautiful outcome.
