As original as it is functional, Adam Goodrum brings back the iconic breeze block in Kite Breeze: a homage to Australian living and European manufacturing.

Known for its endless warmth, deep tones of burnt orange and the famously strong southerly breeze nicknamed, ‘The Fremantle Doctor,’ Western Australia is more than just a place. For Australian designer, Adam Goodrum, it is his childhood, his elixir for growth and a source of undying inspiration.
Originally from the city of Perth, Adam holds the Western state in a special place in his creative mind. This year, the celebrated designer looks back to the past, reminiscing on his childhood environments and the homes in which he was surrounded by the power of the sun, the soundtrack of the ocean and the iconic forms and textures of breeze blocks. As these beloved breeze blocks sheltered the front door of their modest family home back then, this year, they lie at the heart and soul of Kite Breeze: a contemporary breeze block, born of a new collaboration between Adam Goodrum and GB Masonry by Brickworks.
In designing Kite, Adam reflected on the experiences of his childhood homes and developed a deep fascination with the breeze blocks’ interplay with light, our understanding of design, and its capacity to transcend our sense of place. But not just a story of childhood or of place; Kite encapsulates Goodrum’s design ethos and his love of geometric art.
Using new clay-based technology and advanced manufacturing, Kite celebrates the classic late modernist breeze block of the 1960s. Original and function in equal measure, the creative process combined the bold forms of geometric design with the complex engineering and liveable functionality, resulting in a beautifully refined product.
Kite reimagines the way we perceive light and air – independently and all at once. This product brings a unique dappled light experience to façades, spaces and passageways, creating pockets of captivating shadow patterns and graphic structures throughout any space. A nod to times gone by, Kite’s composition allows air to gently and freely circulate through its design. In any configuration, the extraordinary Kite offers protection from shifting weather conditions, even in the harsh Australian seasons.
Available in three iconic colours, the contemporary breeze blocks effect can be bold or subtle in Kite Terracotta, Kite Dune and Kite White. Influenced by the warm, earthy tones and breathtaking landscapes of Western Australia, these colours are offered in two distinctive finishes. The Bay White block is finished in a smooth, sophisticated glaze while Terracotta and Dune offer a more tactile experience in a natural finish – all made with an Italian clay base from San Selmo, Italy.
Designed with adaptability and flexibility in mind, Kite offers unlimited scope. Meticulously crafted to offer endless block configurations, patterns and arrangements, Adam and GB Masonry transforms the timeless product from the past into a new, contemporary experience for the evolving landscapes of today. Perfectly suited for the home as it is large scale public projects, GB Masonry’s engineering excellence and high performance has surpassed all expectations of Kite. Offering 64 variations of patterns and structural builds, this product can be arranged in limitless configurations for your very own one-of-a-kind Kite experience in your space. From subtle, linear light pathways to bold, transcendental forms, your imagination roams free with its design possibilities.
Deceptively simple on one level, but deeply complex on another, Kite is reborn with a refreshed soul – perfect for architects, designers and creatives alike that seek for a modern perspective of true, Australian living.
“It’s been a rewarding collaboration re-imagining the breeze block with GB Masonry – transforming an icon of the past into a new experience for today,” explains Adam. “I’m honoured to put my name to it.”
