Let there be (good) light

Our cities are not only oversaturated with light, they are made all the worse with bad lighting schemes that don’t consider people. Enter the CRI Awards – awards for awful lighting.

Let there be (good) light

Founded on the premise of instigating change, the CRI Awards subverts a traditional premise of an award, where only good things are recognised, and instead asks for submissions of the worst.

The intention is simple, yet potentially far-reaching in its effects. By asking the public to send in examples of awful lighting schemes from our cities, the worst culprits can then be addressed and fixed.

The first phase of the CRI Awards is currently open, calling for submissions from people both in Victoria, and around the world, to send in the worst lighting they come across on the streets.

Having partnered with a local university, the CRI Awards team together with the students will select four of the most awful lighting from Victoria to be redesigned; all as part of their assessment criteria with assistance from established lighting professionals. The real-world project will then once again open up to the public, where a public vote will decide which of the new designs is to be implemented.

The CRI Awards is an initiative of A Billion Suns, driven by a desire to increase the scale of public design intervention and make things better one place at a time.
