The APAC design community has been hard at work again this year and tomorrow night we look forward to rewarding those who have inspired us most.

Before the age of The Internet, the word community tended just to refer to people who shared the same geographical location. Now, however, a community is any group of people (big or small) who share common values or interests regardless of where they live. Because, thanks to the web, it doesn’t matter anymore; Anyone interested in the same hobby, sport or religion, for example, can build their own community thanks to the instant access and connection afforded to us by modern-day technology.
One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the sense of spirit that communities create – the feeling of belonging and learning from one another. The architecture and design industry is no different. Through our shared interest, knowledge and passion for design, we have fostered our own community and within it, smaller communities that are specific to our own particular fields – whether that be furniture design, work surfaces or flooring solutions.
Wooden flooring specialists Tongue ‘n’ Groove have been integral to bringing a sense of community to their sector. On the back of their passion for oak, as well as feedback from the industry, the company have taken engineered flooring to a whole new level; creating floorboards fashioned from three solid layers of oak as opposed to just layers of ply under a thin façade of timber. And thanks to the success of this innovative product, Tongue n Groove have now worked across many various sectors and alongside numerous practitioners, bringing everyone together under one umbrella to create one large inclusive group.
The brand’s clients are a broad and diverse mix from the residential, commercial and corporate sectors, with projects all over the country. From Adelaide’s Mayfield Hotel to the Crumpler’s store in Melbourne and The Porter co-working space in Sydney, not to mention private residences in Brisbane. Thus, this once disparate group of companies and people are united through a common collaborator and an interest in finding the best flooring solutions for their project.
On Friday June 30, Tongue n Groove is joining us as the official Gold Sponsor of our inaugural INDE.Awards – an event that will see the entire APAC design community come together under one roof to explore the best products, people and projects of our region. From those who are up and coming to the luminaries that have already made their mark on our industry, scores of designs and designers will be recognised and celebrated! We hope to see you there!

Place-specific design is so very de rigueur. But beyond the obvious, how is place-driven design being strategically integrated across both macro and micro aspects of a mega development? This was Terry Snow’s objective for his best-in-class Willinga Park Equestrian Centre – and Cox Architecture has delivered.
