Dance For Life 2018 announced!

After a 4-year hiatus, Dance For Life returned to the design community in March this year. Next year, it’s back again at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney’s Circular Quay — promising to be bigger and better than ever.

DFL 2018 at VIVID Sydney
In 2018, Dance For Life (DFL) will be held on Friday 15 June, during Vivid Sydney for the first time. The official DFL 2018 program and DFL 2017 video was revealed at a launch event held recently in the showroom of TCW, who along with ThinkingWorks and Instyle make up the trifecta of companies behind the popular event.

DFL harnesses the best of designers’ natural creativity and competitiveness, inviting interior design teams into the dance studio and onto the stage. Assisted by the choreography professionals at Dance Central, teams add their own flair in costumes and performance to express a particular theme — and each year the high levels of creativity and effort make the judges’ job a challenging one.

What’s New?
“We have given everyone (including ourselves) more time this year to build the event up and work on routines, fundraising and exposure for all involved — our amazing sponsors, the dance teams, ReachOut and everyone who lends a hand to make this happen,” says Megan Byrne of TCW. “We are building on the elements that worked last year and also tweaking a few areas. We have some fun surprises planned for the night and are expecting this to be bigger, more flamboyant, more fun, more energy… just MORE!”

A Designer Circus
This year’s theme was Icons, and the theme for DFL 2018 has been announced as CIRCUS. “I think the designers will take an element of the circus or a song that relates to it and tease it into an amazing performance on the night,” says Megan.“It doesn’t have to ‘scream’ circus but could just have a sliver that weaves its way through their performance. The designers have been quite excited,” she adds. “They certainly know how to take a theme and interpret it into something unique and this gives them the space to play, be creative and flamboyant.”

From the DFL teams
We can’t wait to see what the designers will do with the Circus theme. For the time being, here are some hints as to what they’re thinking…

“We are rapt with the Circus theme for Dance for Life for 2018 as it gives us an excuse to celebrate the avant-garde, the strange and unusual! Bring on your weird!!”
–The Bold Collective

“Greenbox is enchanted by the magic and spectacle of a Circus theme! As a first-time participator, we cannot wait to dive into the creative process, raise some money for ReachOut and have a good time doing it!”
–Greenbox

“Siren are ‘tickled pink’ to be participating in Dance for Life 2018. There’ll be no clowning around this year as our dancers prepare to ‘walk the tightrope’ that is the Dance For Life stage at Circular Quay. We all agree life can be a bit of a Circus but are stepping into the limelight with pleasure. ReachOut will certainly benefit from our ‘taming’ (sorry training). Expect to be amazed, intrigued, but above all entertained by the dance crew known as The Siren Circus…”
–Siren Design

“We’re very excited to be part of this event for the first time! The Circus theme is definitely a fun way to start — we’ve been brainstorming ideas for something simple and elegant, but with a ‘wow’ factor, which is how we like to do things here. We’re looking forward to raising lots of funds for ReachOut while having fun on this journey.”
