The 4th edition of BEX Asia, the region’s green building expo, was back in full force at Singapore’s Suntec Convention Centre from 14 to 16 September 2011.

This year’s show had 250 exhibiting companies from about 30 countries; it also drew a record of 7,693 visitors – a 7 per cent increase over last year’s event.

Besides a host of green building architecture, design, products, practices and technologies, there were also 3 new dedicated national pavilions from Australia, Canada and Malaysia, in addition to the Singapore and Taiwan pavilions.

Established players in the green building arena this year included Johnson Controls, KONE, Lafarge, Legrand and Lutron, among others.

Besides such leading names, one young but highly innovative Singapore firm, Green Koncepts, proved to be a real crowd attraction.

At the Singapore pavilion, the green technology company launched Koncepts Energy Management, the first cloud-based energy management system in Singapore to offer real-time energy intelligence and control through a simple web-based User Interface delivered via a Cloud Based Framework.

“Green Koncepts’ primary mission was to make energy management simple because we felt that it was over complicated and hence restricted mass adoption,” says Green Koncepts founder and CEO Kenneth Lee.

The system does not require new expensive cabling, is simple to use, and is cost effective according to Lee.

“Response has been very enthusiastic and we have had different types of companies expressing interest ranging from ESCOs, facilities management companies, electricity demand aggregators to companies and businesses.”

Another highlight this year was the Guest Speaker Programme at FOCUS@BEX. Speaking on sustainable design and development, as well as trends were such names as noted architect Fritz Oettl from Austria, Fiona Nixon, principal architect of Woodhead, Australia, and Mr Mann Young from Lend Lease Asia.

BEX Asia 2012 is slated to take place from 10 –12 October 2012 at the Suntec Convention Centre with a new segment on Green Interiors and Green Homes/Offices.
