An Introduction to Regenerative Architecture

Presented by Havwoods

An Introduction to Regenerative Architecture

Session Synopsis

The construction sector is a major part of the climate change problem. As Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs points out, “Every year over 4 billion tonnes of cement are produced, contributing to around 8 percent of global CO2 emissions”.

As bad as that statistic sounds, it is just one of many. Any attempt to calculate the sector’s true contribution to the crisis must factor in all carbon emissions (embodied and operational), over the full life cycle of all projects.

Of course, progress has been made and ‘Sustainable Architecture’ is now a well-known term. However, for many architects, sustainability doesn’t go far enough because it only involves minimising negative environmental impacts. For them ‘Regenerative Architecture’ – which imagines a world in which negative impacts are eliminated and buildings become part of the environment – is the solution.

This session explores this groundbreaking concept and explains why timber deserves to be included when discussing it.

Key Learning Outcomes

At the end of this presentation you should be able to –

  • Summarise the construction sector’s contribution to global carbon emissions.
  • Define ‘sustainable architecture’ and outline how the concept has evolved over time.
  • Explain what is meant by the term ‘regenerative design’.
  • Outline the key components of ‘regenerative architecture’ and explain how it differs from sustainable architecture.
  • Explain why timber, a natural resource, has a place in regenerative architecture.
