Integrating Louvres & Screens into Modular Buildings

Session Synopsis

There are several good reasons to integrate louvres into commercial buildings. Beyond their functional purposes, their aesthetic contribution to façades is significant. Retrofitted to exteriors, louvres can give buildings a new lease of life.

However, specifiers need to be aware that working with louvres is not a one size fits all proposition. What works in one type of project does not necessarily hold true for all.

Modular buildings are a good example. Architects integrating louvres into these structures face specific challenges: prefabrication means that sequencing doesn’t align with what they are used to; builders tend to impose design requirements onto architects to ensure successful installation; and the fact that these projects involve both a modular builder and an on-site builder means that architects effectively work for two clients at once.

This session examines these challenges and more. Using real-life examples to illustrate their points, our speakers explain the best ways to approach the task of integrating louvres and screens into modular buildings.

Key Learning Outcomes

At the end of this presentation you should be able to –

  • List the benefits of integrating louvres and screens into modular buildings.
  • Identify reasons for the increased prevalence of modular buildings, particularly in educational projects.
  • Outline the sequencing patterns associated with modular buildings and how they differ from those of conventional projects.
  • Outline the various design considerations involved in integrating louvres into building façades.
  • Explain the design requirements that builders of modular buildings place on architects and why these are necessary.
