Australia will next week play host to a visit from two of Scandinavia’s most awarded designers of the new wave of Danish design.
February 18th, 2009
Since establishing their Copenhagen design studio in 2000, Flemming Busk and Stephan B. Hertzog have made their name in the design world, winning numerous major international awards.
Most recently the pair were last year awarded the Danish Design Prize – an award previously won by Arne Jacobsen, Paul Kjaerholm, Hans Wegner, and Verner Panton.
“This duo is like living design royalty and really lacks the credibility and recognition for their design contribution here,” says Shane Scully of Australian stockist of Interstudio.
“Whilst the duo is still young and many would view them, in the over used term, as ‘emerging designers’ these multi-award-winning Architects have entirely moved past the emergence stage,” Scully says.
Designers of office furniture, upholstery and products busk+hertzog also advise others on design strategy. Their designs are characterised by clean lines and “a simple expression with minimal embellishment”.
The pair draw obvious inspiration from the shapes and forms of nature – a perfect example of this can be seen in their ‘Wishbone’ stand [pictured below] resembling a small grove of saplings.
Their designs exemplify the new wave of Danish designers making a name for themselves internationally and at home, where Denmark’s ‘golden age’ of design, from the likes of Fritz Hansen and Kjærholm, continue to hold great influence.
Busk and Hertzog will be guests of honour at two luncheons to be held in Melbourne and Sydney next week. “This is an unprecedented opportunity to ask such successful design luminaries all the things that you ever wanted to know,” says Scully.
