Sydney’s Public Furniture Wins Red Dot Design

Sydney based studio Tzannes Associates has won the Red Dot Design Award for its range of public domain furniture pieces.

Sydney’s Public Furniture Wins Red Dot Design

Commissioned by The City of Sydney council, in collaboration with Australian Built Urban Designs, the furniture has already been installed at new city precincts Barangaroo and Green Square. It will also be featured along the transformed George Street boulevard, and the new Darling Harbour redevelopment.

Tzannes’ submission was among 5,214 entrants from 57 countries around the world, but successfully took out the product category prize for 2016. The public furniture collection includes nine pieces – a bench seat with arm rests, pedestrian light pole, three bollards, bubbler, tree guard, tree grate and a bin. The designs will be rolled out citywide, replacing the mishmash of styles currently installed.

“Tzannes’ objective was to create a family of elements reflecting Sydney’s unique cultural and urban context inspired by, among other things, the city’s waterfront industrial heritage, the Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, and our outdoor lifestyle and culture,” said Tzannes Design Director, Alec Tzannes.

Hosted by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany, The Red Dot Design Award is one of the world’s largest design completions, with more than 17,000 entries in 2015 alone. This year, the jury was bigger than ever before, with 41 experts coming together in the Ruhr area to evaluate each and every object live on site over a period of several days. Indesign’s own Raj Nandan was on the 2016 jury as one of the independent design experts.
