The latest attempt at saving the planet comes in waves

Four years after the initial proposal, Enersis project is still waiting to generate power from ocean’s waves.

Waves of energy will soon be emitted from Portugal’s coastline when renewable energy company Enersis installs the world’s first commercial wave farm.

The project will use Pelamis machines which are a series of red tubes, each the size of a small commuter train.

Named after the Latin word for sea snake, the machines will be linked together and pointed towards the waves.

The waves travel down the tubes causing them to bob up and down while a hydraulic system harnesses the movement to generate electricity.

The project, which began in 2003, is expected to be operational by the end of this year with the first energy waves brought ashore this month.
