Typography takes a 3-dimensional turn.

We’ve long been admirers of one8one7, so much so that we left it in their hands to create the award-winning visual identity for Indesign magazine when we re-launched last May.

Marcus Piper and Christey Johanssson – the design duo behind the studio – work extensively with type and branding from their base in Austinmer, on the coast of NSW.

Five years in the making, ProtoTypography is a project that brings together their love of type and the 3rd dimension, whereby everyday household objects are born from 3-dimensional letters and punctuation marks.

“The idea really came from experimentation. We noticed the beautiful shapes that occurred when you revolve, extrude or otherwise extract a letterform,” said Marcus.

“That immediately led down a path of exploration and the possibilities of creating products / pieces, which are in a way self-explanatory but also really well branded.”

The ‘revolve’ table with the letter ‘T’ as its base was the first piece that triggered the rest of the collection currently at protype stage.

“At the end of the day it is all about language, functionality and experience.”
