A new car park is set to scintillate at Brisbane’s Domestic Terminal.
August 19th, 2010
International art-based studio Urban Art Projects (UAP) will be partnering with artist Ned Kahn and Hassell Sydney to transform a multi-level car park into a work of urban art.
The Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) commissioned UAP to convert Brisbane’s new Domestic Terminal short-term multi-level car park into a public art project with the help of American artist Ned Khan, renowned for taking advantage of the elements for his dynamic works.
For the collaboration with UAP and BAC’s design team, Khan will create a 5000 sq metre kinetic façade for the new short-term car park.
From the exterior, one side of the car park will appear to scintillate when the wind passes through some 250,000 aluminium panels, at the same time providing natural ventilation.
Inside, the patterns of light and shadow will be projected onto the walls as the sunlight passes through the panels.
The new Domestic Terminal short-term multi-level car park is part of a significant upgrade of the Brisbane Domestic Terminal and will also provide 5,300 undercover car spaces across nine levels.
The car park and Ned Kahn façade is expected to be completed in late 2011.
