Stumble through the cobbled backstreets of North Melbourne, and you might miss it. The only indication you’ve reached the Pierre and Charlotte studio is perched halfway up the wall – the distinctive image of their French bulldog, Ferdinand, set on a lime-green background.

That, and the buzz of activity from beyond the dark timber panels and brick façade.

With the look and feel of an artist’s home, the showroom is an eclectic mix of lamps and lights, cosy armchairs and clean-line couches with lush and quality upholstery.

It’s hard to believe, but the Juliens didn’t start off in the world of design.

In fact, the couple came from worlds apart. Pierre from Paris and Charlotte from Tasmania, first crossed paths and fell in love as teen models in Japan.

But their experiences in the art, music and fashion worlds shaped their desire to head down the path of furniture and lighting design.

Over the past fifteen years this duo has been expanding their range, exploring new design possibilities and experimenting with environmentally conscious materials, with a focus on quality, longevity and practicality.

Walk through the studio, and you’ll come to their quaint workshop, which highlights their detachment from a world of mass production and provides a transparent space to watch as their handcrafted furniture comes to life.
