China Doll’s beachside sister brings modern Asian cuisine and Iain Halliday design to Manly.
July 29th, 2010
The eminent Sydney designer, Iain Halliday – director of Burley Katon Halliday (bkh) – recombined classic elements of Asian dining spaces, with whitewashed French décor to create the airy, beachside eatery China Beach.
The obligatory Buddha is white porcelain, commanding the eye down a glossy red corridor and red epoxy-resin floor, to the back of the restaurant.
Lanterns are white and light, clustered together as a central ceiling feature, weightlessly floating over the dining space.
The floor, a mesmerising mosaic of Vietnamese stencilled tiles in blues and browns, balances out the white timber walls, contrasting with the whitewashed wooden panels and white-on-white table settings.
Touches of chilli-red were used for chopsticks and tapestry finishings, showing off the classic French cafe chairs and whitewashed vintage furniture.
The mirrored sidewall, the modern streamlined bar and the restaurant’s water view add a quintessential touch of Sydney to the fusion of style.
Under Chef Mai Busayarat (Jimmy Liks, Rambutan, China Doll) China Beach is far from just a design destination.
With a modern Asian menu to match its Sydney-style interior, it promises to be as popular as its Woolloomooloo sister.
