Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson: this time, the car is a canvas and water is the paint.
March 11th, 2008
Heralded as one of the most important contemporary artists of his generation, Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson has joined the ranks of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein as the 16th artist of all time to be commissioned to redesign a BMW for the BMW Art Car project.
Known for his multi-sensory art and design, Eliasson did not paint the BMW like his legendary predecessors – opting instead to strip the car’s chassis and replace the body with his own artwork, which included over 500 gallons of water sprayed over the vehicle to create an ice canopy.
The car was a part of the ’Your Tempo: Olafur Eliasson’ exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which was on display in February 2008.
