Belgium Colours Outside the Lines

Zebra crossings become artist’s canvases

Belgium Colours Outside the Lines

BY

December 20th, 2007

The Belgium city of Hasselt has come up with a creative initiative to allow artists to showcase their work in public. The white lines of 19 zebra crossings have started to be replaced with fascinating art works and patterns created by talented designers, fashion designers and artists.

From the 1st December 2007 the project begun to demonstrate how they can contribute to a vibrant living environment via their artwork. The reason that the artwork is displayed on zebra crossings is to make pedestrians and drivers more aware of the significance of their surroundings.

Design elements such as colour, lines and texture have been employed to alert the onlooker to culturally imbedded visual communication that would have previously gone unnoticed. The project aims at stirring and inspiring interaction between the project, the town and the public.
