The Pacific, Bondi Beach

The transformation of a French Riviera inspired eyesore into a contemporary, mixed-use development – is set to change the face of Bondi Beach… again

When The Swiss-Grand Hotel on Sydney’s Bondi Beach was earmarked for redevelopment, the vast project demanded a crack design team that would drag the eyesore kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, delivering a quality product.

From first impressions through to each interior detail, this presented a unique opportunity to re-invigorate the controversial (widely regarded as kitsch) existing hotel, re-introducing it as a mixed use residential, hospitality and commercial facility: The Pacific, Bondi Beach.

Esteemed architect Andrew Andersons of PTW was engaged alongside three leading interior designers: George Freedman (PTW Interiors), Jonathan Richards (SJB Interiors) and Koichi Takada (Koichi Takada Architects). Each has designed interiors across each of the floor plans that buyers can option for inclusion in their purchase price.

With 45-square-metre studios through to the multi-storey, domed ceiling 300-square-metre “lighthouse” dwellings, the developers are asking a cool $500,000 up to an estimated $15M for prime ocean-side living.

Briefed with a strong focus on lifestyle and encouraged to interpret the significant development in a fashion that was sympathetic to the location and history of the site, the $440 million-plus overhaul will result in 95 residential apartments and 69 boutique hotel rooms that offer layouts working around the themes of ’Easy Elegance’, ’Elements’ and ’Natural Luxury’.

With a disproportionately high demand for high-end, inner city, beachside housing and limited development land available; the regeneration of the site into luxury apartments is being earmarked as one of the most sought after developments in Sydney’s East in years.

For the Rebel Property and Capit.el Groups (responsible for the nearby The Bondi development) this weekend’s launch and first release on sales will signal the first step in bringing the long-planned project to fruition.

Completion is set for 2015 and indesignlive will be bringing you interviews with the design team as the project progresses.
