What does your company supply?
Small Australian Projects in a unique furniture and fittings company that works with some of Australia’s finest architects to produce furniture that engages and celebrates national identity and environmental sensitivity.
Commencing our business with award winning architects such as Donovan Hill, m3architecture, John Wardle Architects, Durbach Block Architects and Owen and Vokes, we aim to set a precedent of quality for both consumers and future designers. All of the above mentioned ranges will be exhibited for the first time in Sydney at Saturday in Design at 19 Foster Street, Surry Hills.
What’s the history of your company?
Toby Lewis, the founder of Small Australian Projects, came up with the concept after Donovan Hill had completed designing and building a home for him. When it came time to furnish the house Toby found it difficult to find furniture that fit the overall aesthetics of the house so Donovan Hill did as many architects do and designed a range of bespoke furniture for him.
It was through this experience that Toby decided to revive the current market by creating a series of furniture ranges designed by Australian architects. The furniture designed for his house then became the foundation of what was to be the inaugural Donovan Hill range.

Sarah Deutrom our General Manager
What are your client’s priorities at the moment?
Our client’s priorities at the moment are affordable and accessible design. Our overall aim is to make architecture more obtainable. These furniture ranges allow a greater part of the community to own a piece of architectural brilliance without the expense of an entire house.
What is good design to you?
A good design is one that emphasises the emotional connection Australian’s have with their places. Our combination of priorities and sources allow us to produce furniture and fittings that represent the importance of ‘designs’ coexisting with Australian locale, climate and life.
What does the future hold?
In an effort to represent multiplicity within Australian architecture, we look forward to inviting more firms to join our stable of designers who will diversify the range and create innovative, pluralistic pieces that respond to our various lifestyles. We’ve also starting a series of exhibitions called On Show that promote emerging Australian designers.
These exhibitions give emerging designers the opportunity to launch their product and promote their designs. The next On Show exhibition, ‘Pieces’ by Paul Liddy will be held on the 5th of August at our Brisbane showroom.
