Bilingual

Bilingual creates timeless jewellery pieces for men and women. Designer Marta Niegowska speaks to Indesign.

What does your company supply?

We design and create unique jewellery that enables both men and women to express their individuality. Our collections comprise mostly of rings, including wedding bands, neckpieces and soon to be released bangles and earrings.

We are dedicated to presenting people with different ways they can wear our jewellery to incite their imagination.

What’s the history of your company?

Launched in 2005 as a side project outside of interior design, Bilingual Design made its debut at the Powerhouse Museum Designer Markets after a year of market research and investigating what excited the design conscious in the jewellery arena.

After exploring a range of concepts and ideas, it was my series of interlocking rings that I made for my partner to wear while he was away that got people talking, and I soon found myself taking orders for colleagues and friends.

Where do you distribute?

We have a strong commitment to the design market community whereby we enjoy interacting with new people and existing customers. We have made a conscious effort to limit our wholesale exposure to ensure people get a personal and exclusive experience.

We have a regular stall at Paddington Markets as well as an annual exhibition and appear at special design events in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne & Adelaide.

Customers can purchase all our pieces at the Bilingual online shop, which is also used as a communication avenue for news and upcoming events.

What sets your company apart?

We design for the individual. All our collections are developed from strong concepts whereby every piece has a story that relates directly to how and why it was designed.

We are 100% Australian made and all our pieces are locally handmade, from concept and design development through to prototyping and production. Additionally, all pieces are made with recycled Australian silver.

What is good design to you?

Good design should have a strong concept, be visually beautiful, a little playful, ergonomic and - most importantly - original. These are the factors that form the basis for Bilingual collections.

What does the future hold?

Ultimately we want people to embrace our core philosophy to design for the individual. Additionally, we aspire to open a Bilingual flagship store, which we envisage to be a place where people can come to experience all our collections as well as learn about why and how each piece is made.
