Where will motoring take us in the year 2020? If Matthew Blytham has anything to do with it, it will be all about the driver.

A Swinburne University Design Student, Blytham has taken out the tertiary student drawing/design category of the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) Target 2020 Car of the Future competition.

Powered by hydrogen/ethanol fuels, the ‘Velo’ lightweight two-seater is designed with the true driver in mind. “Its purpose is to reignite the passion of driving, without having to worry about burning limited fossil fuels and damaging our precious earth,” Blytham says.

After spending a year in the University’s internal design consultancy, the Swinburne Design Centre, Byltham has also been awarded an internship in Germany at the internationally renowned Frog industrial and product design firm.

“During the past year I had the privilege to work within a wide range of design sectors, including product development, manufacturing, retail, exhibition, and automotive design,” he says. “This has given me remarkable insight into the current status of design in Australia.”

Blytham receives $3000 for his winning entry, which will undoubtedly help as he sets off overseas. The VACC Target 2020 competition winning entries will be on show at the Melbourne Motor Show from 27 February – 9 March 2009.
