The creative talents of Nicci Green have spanned many mediums, yet it’s her respect for artisanal craftsmanship that remained as the constant throughout her career. Her eye for design was honed at an early career as Melbourne editor of Vogue Entertaining, which led to her a role as homeware designer at Country Road, while also producing product pieces for international labels such as Donna Karen, Armani Casa and Nicole Fahri.

2012 saw Nicci launching Articolo, a unique lighting brand is inspired by her love of the natural variations in mouth-blown glass, and is the result of her own ‘light bulb’ moment when exhibiting glassware design at Maison&Objet, “I was filling in time in between client meetings and put one of my glass vases upside down on my hand and said to my business partner, ‘I think I’d like to design lighting’. It started as an irreverent thought, but then I really thought about it and knew it was something I wanted to explore.

“I’ve also worked with the same metalworker for decades,” says Nicci. “I find it so satisfying to work with local artisans and, as Articolo is an international brand, we feel like we’ve taken the local artisans with us along the way.”

Mouth-blown glass is a feature in nearly all of the designs in the Articolo collection. “As each piece is different, it’s almost like there’s a soul that exists within every piece of mouth-blown glass. The striations and glass-stringing or bubble details within it throw patterns and movements onto a wall, which I find so beautiful.”

Nicci has designed over 20 lighting collections and Articolo’s Australian made and handcrafted architectural lighting, which is now found in five-star luxury hotels, retail stores, residential projects and the finest hospitality venues around the world.

“I believe that simple, classic, timeless lighting has soul and depth and creates a fantastic ambience and sense of sanctuary,” says Nicci. “When I get home, I turn on my table lamps and wall sconces and I feel like I’m cocooned from the pressures of the world.”
