Interacting with Jordana Maisie

Interacting with Jordana Maisie

Jordana Maisie's interactive installations transform spaces and draw their audiences into a unique experience.

Australian artist Jordana Maisie is making a name for herself locally and internationally through her sculptural and experiential designs, which rely on real-time interactivity to engage and affect their audience.

"Interactivity is interesting to me because on many levels it pulls the audience member into the present moment," Maisie explains.

"This feeling can be very freeing."

The ideas behind Maisie's work come through "observing and interacting with space, whether that be on an architectural, socio-cultural, psychological or environmental level," Maisie says.

"I am inspired by watching, responding to and transforming physical spaces with the intent to inspire people's curiosity, imagination and playfulness, but mostly to facilitate collective experience and connection, both with oneself and each other."

One of the artist's most recent installations was created for Saturday in Design, a Project collaboration with Spence & Lyda and Stockholm-based furniture company Massproductions.

Inspired by ideas of rebirth, springtime and flowers – the elements of the season – Maisie transformed Spence & Lyda's showroom with her colourful kaleidoscopic display.

Shifting patterns and colours were projected onto the surfaces of Massproductions' Tio range for a live display that provided a unique experience for each viewer.

"The moving image aesthetic was inspired by the theme of spring and blossoming, and a want to create a sense of blossoming or transformation within the showroom, with the Tio range at the core," Maisie explains.

"The visual aesthetic of the highly graphic and always changing kaleidoscopic patterns supported the graphic and colourful nature of the Spence & Lyda showroom."

Collaborations are a vital part of Maisie's work, providing inspiration and new opportunities to create intriguing and spectacular projects.

"What I love most about collaboration," Maisie says, "is the ability to create work that neither collaborator could achieve on their own.

"I also enjoy working with passionate and skilled people within all fields, as they inspire me to meet their level of skill and passion, and it is often the best way to learn."
