PARK(ing) Day

17 September 2009

PARK(ing) Day

There'll be an explosion of green space around the Globe on Friday 18 September 2009.

It’s that time of year again, when you go to pull in to your favourite parking spot – you know, the one right outside work – and bam! It’s been turned into a park.

There may be a few people experiencing this around the globe tomorrow morning with the annual PARK(ing) Day event. Aimed at raising awareness of the importance of green space in our cities, the day asks participants to create temporary parks in car spaces.

This year Brisbane will once again be out in force, turfing car spots, putting up umbrellas, bringing out the eskies and greening the city with several installations.

Last year saw over 40 ‘parks’ constructed for the day, with everyone from architects and designers to community groups getting involved.

PARK(ing) Day originated in San Francisco in 2005, created by art and design collective Rebar, who took the considered that paying for a metered parking spot was like ‘renting’ public space.

The day will be celebrated throughout Australia and the rest of the world tomorrow, Friday 18 September 2009, including Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Brisbane.

Visit the Brisbane PARK(ing) Day website for more information on installations throughout the city, or go to the official PARK(ing) Day site.
