Memories and Fungi

Two upcoming exhibitions at Sydney’s metalab focus on nature and moments in time.

metalab is focused on promoting and supporting Australia’s artists, designers and makers of contemporary jewellery and objects.

Their aim is to bring together designers/makers and the customer to create a personal experience with design through workshops, exhibitions and installations.

Two of metalab’s upcoming exhibitions for 2009 are from Melbourne-based jeweller Sim Luttin and Adelaide-based Michelle Kelly.

Luttin is an accomplished object designer who takes obvious inspiration from the her personal experience – considering nostalgia and the passing of time.

Luttin’s exhibition, Hints of a Memory, includes the interesting ‘piece-a-day’ project, where she has literally created a piece of jewellery or an object each day for a year.

Kelly’s exhibition, Fifth Kingdom, uses traditional silversmithing techniques to explore ecosystems and specifically the natural recycling and breaking down processes of fungi.

Metalab has recently announced the opening of their second exhibition space. The two spaces, both housed in their Surry Hills location will now be known as metalab1 and metalab2.

Hints of a Memory and Fifth Kingdom will run from 6 February – 1 March.
