“There are forces in nature that are beyond the control of mankind,” says designer Nao Tamura; “we have learned how fragile we are in the face of such forces.”

Presenting ‘Interconnection’ at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile as part of Lexus Design Amazing, New York-based Japanese designer Nao Tamura has created a unique installation that explores man’s interdependent relationship with nature.

“Interconnected and interdependent, there is a constant give-and-take in nature,” continues Tamura, “life does not rest.” And by simply moving around the room, the visitor affects the air in the space, which in turn gives the piece its motion; interconnection in its most basic form. “It is my hope that people will begin to notice that their actions, no matter how small, can affect our surroundings on a scale that is larger than one’s self.”

Tamura studied communication design at Parsons School of Design in New York, later founding her studio in Tokyo, and now currently based in New York City. As a product of the Tokyo and New York City creative communities, her solutions are equally at ease in both the 2-D and 3-D worlds and possess an uncanny ability to find an emotional connection with the audience. Tamura defies the kind of categorisation that the industry status-quo often insists upon; her unique solutions are more than simply design and possess a rare balance of innovation and beauty.

“Our movement together gives us life,” adds Tamura, “life is always more amazing in motion.”
