Hive Lighting Winner Announced

Designer Brad Stebbing has taken out the KE-ZU, Kenneth Cobonpue and Hive Lighting Design Competition with his design ‘BUD’.

The competition asked entrants to “create an ambient lamp for the darkness of tomorrow”. Designs had to work to five key criteria: environmental friendliness, illumination, ease of manufacture, economic efficiency and cost-effective delivery (freight).

‘BUD’ is a collapsible light that contracts and expands depending on the desired look. Its construction is suitable for and promotes the use of energy-saving light bulbs, reduces space during freight and creates a dynamic aesthetic. Stebbing’s entry was a standout, with all judges awarding top marks for innovation and noting the light for its environmentally sustainable design.

Designer and judge Matthew Sheargold described ‘BUD’ as “unique, a beautiful new form”. The light, which visually mimics geometries of nature, uses Hive’s sustainable materials and manufacturing processes.

In his submission Stebbing said, “The lumiere’s ability to collapse, ensures that it can fulfil the role of a centre piece anywhere in the world, using as little fossil fuels as possible to get there.”

The judges also saw great potential in the runner up designs with second place going to Dennis Abalos with ‘Porcupine’, third place went to Frances Lim for the ‘Ruff Series’ and fourth was awarded to Eddy Lee for ‘Expandable Light’.

Stebbing receives a trip to the Hive factory in the Philippines and the opportunity to have his design manufactured.

Congratulations to Brad and all the winners and we look forward to seeing some of these designs being produced in the future.
