Melbourne’s Light In Winter

Melbourne is illuminated in June and July for Federation Square’s annual Light in Winter celebration.

Melbourne’s Light In Winter

There’s something warming about seeing your city lit up in the cold and dark of Winter. Sydney’s Vivid Festival drew 400,000 people to its harbourside installations and now it’s Melbourne’s turn, as Federation Square celebrates all that is flaming, shining and colourful.

From 2 June to 3 July, a series of free events is brightening up city nights.

At the heart of the festival is Light Hearts, a sculpture by Canadian-born Bruce Ramus which echoes the annual Burning Man Festival.

A 13 metre high pyramid in the middle of the square calls for anyone from the community to contribute to it how they like – making a lantern, bringing a light from home, writing a word or a poem, adding it to the structure and watching it slowly grow.

It’s a celebration of the community and creative spirit of the vibrant city.

It wouldn’t be a light festival without the guys from THE PROJECTS. They’ve come up with Projector Bike, a city-cycling tour of Melbourne’s lighting features with commentary from some of the city’s top lighting designers.

The tour also features short films and projections from innovative visual artists and filmmakers and Swinburne and RMIT students, shining their light on the city streets.

Projector Bike takes place on Sunday 26 June, so be quick if you want to jump on board.

Visit the website for more information on all the beautiful works and events that make up Light in Winter. Brave the cold, step outside and see Melbourne in a completely different light.
