On the eve of Brisbane Indesign, a unique collaboration will see Fortitude Valley’s Hynes Street come alive.

Brisbane-based design practice TONIC in association with Brisbane Indesign, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Oh Hello! has teamed up with the architects, engineers and interior designers of Hynes Street to present a student-based design competition and street party on the eve of Brisbane Indesign.

On Friday 25 May from 5pm, Hynes Street will play host to Changing Lanes, featuring a pop-up bar, music, art, food stalls and exhibitions, bringing alive Brisbane’s dormant laneway culture and showing just how much a vibrant laneway scene can positively impact a city.

The Oh Hello! Bar will be in full swing; DJs will be spinning tunes; boutique food stalls and the TONIC Espresso Bar will be serving up food and hot coffee to visitors. Surrounding buildings will light up with splashes of light and colour.

A design competition for students, with pop-up exhibitions of finalist entries and live voting on the night, will showcase the work of talented up-and-coming designers, with prizes up for grabs for the winners.

The event follows TONIC’s last Hynes Street event, Stiletto in the Ghetto, where the strip was transformed into a night-time fashion runway.

This time coinciding with Brisbane Indesign, Changing Lanes provides a forum for the wider Brisbane community to consider what defines Brisbane’s ’Lanes’.
