The current revitalisation of thinking local is something Melbourne’s Satelight embrace with open arms. Their specialty is contemporary luminaires for interior fit-outs, and most of their light fittings – and all of their custom made light fixtures – are designed and manufactured in Melbourne. Keeping their design and manufacture local guarantees that Satelight meet their clients’ design requests with accuracy. It also explains their reputation for controlled lead times.

Satelight’s origins were multidisciplinary, and today, they benefit from this early creative approach. Their award-winning repertoire once encompassed sculpture, photography, architecture, jewellery and product design in addition to lighting. Now, they have over 14 years experience in contemporary lighting, and so can offer a wealth of technical and design advice.

Clients find that they’re able to discuss projects with them in depth, because uniquely, all of Satelight’s project managers have a design background, meaning design-specific language and concepts don’t need to be simplified or translated.

This has led to particularly productive relationships with many design and construction professionals, and working with them, Satelight have produced a portfolio of commercial projects that includes Microsoft, Origin Energy, Myer, Woolworths, AAMI Park, ANZ Stadium, Sofitel and Sheraton Hotels, Urbis, Jones Lang LaSalle, Stockland and Westfield Shopping Centres.

They’ve worked with interior designers, architects, builders, electrical contractors and wholesalers – but also general public customers with a keen eye for contemporary design. And whoever their client is, “We work alongside them to provide a resolved and finished product which performs to specification.”

For Satelight, good design is, “Design which can stand the test of time, that is honest with its materials and embodies a concept larger than the object itself.” As a creative design studio, many of their light fittings are exclusive to them.

Complementing their in-house luminaires collection, Satelight are agents for Aëon Illumination and Shed 17.  The Aëon Illumination range is a fusion of design and industry, while Shed 17 offers a rustic, vintage charm. Satelight is also currently expanding their off-the-shelf lighting range, allowing for products to be despatched instantly.

This need for quick shipment is something they’ve observed becoming increasingly important for their clients. They say, “The key priorities we see with our clients are requirement of prompt lead times, customisation of lights, a desire to purchase local products and lastly, cost effectiveness.” These changing priorities are what keeps Satelight fresh – they’re continually seeking to address clients’ needs and so as a company and as a design studio they’re constantly evolving – with an eye to embodying concepts larger than itself.
