Darlings of Darlinghurst

04 August 2009

Darlings of Darlinghurst

The Darlinghurst precinct got glammed up to bring us their best for Saturday in Design.

Darlinghurst made themselves the darlings of this year’s Saturday in Design by introducing the Darlo People Smugglers – Minis that roved Sydney picking up people from other precincts and taking them back to Darlinghurst. This tight knit group of eight companies in four locations had plenty going on – both on +Friday and on the Saturday.

From first thing on +Friday morning, Stylecraft held a series of talks on sustainability, which was followed by a presentation of awards to the students of the Whitehouse Institute of Design at Mico.

The certificates, presented by Matthew Sheargold, thanked the students for their installation in both the Stylecraft and Mico showrooms, made of old lever-arch binder folders. Alternative Surfaces also had a presence at Stylecraft’s showroom, showing their latest range of finishes.

On +Friday evening, Zenith and Bolon opened their doors for drinks but saved the main event for Saturday – a Barbie wonderland inspired by their new ‘Stiletto’ table inspired by Barbie’s high heels. HASSELL were responsible for the live installation which included several beautiful girls in Barbie get-up, representing Princess Barbie, Army Barbie, Corporate Barbie and so on, while Bolon had a stand upstairs to show their carpet and Rim Fabrics had their upholstery on some of the stools.

Taking up the ground floor of Luxe Studios, Jardan and Boyac teamed up to show their latest range of furniture (Jardan) and upholstery (Boyac) – all of which was new within the last 18 months, including the new ‘Archie’ chair, being given away as a prize – what a perfect partnership!

Last but not least was Thonet who launched a new colour range of the ‘Planar’ chair based on the colours of the Cuisinere counting rods that you almost certainly had as a kid – google it and you’ll know what I mean. Plus a series of new chairs from Max Design.
