Flirting With Form

Parisian designer Jean Marc Gady presents his first solo show in the States.

The exhibition, entitled French Cancan, was on display at Gallery R'Pure in New York from March 2009 until this week.

Having recently set up his own practice, Jean Marc Gady has drawn on his penchant for blending elegance and humour to produce this saucy collection that, through both title and form, alludes to the seductiveness of a dancer’s skirt.

‘French Cancan’ is a product that sprung from the repetitive movement of steps in a dance. The lampshade is repeated in a wheel formation, its pleats creating a sense of luxury finesse.

'Gourmet' food tray again plays on the notions of movement and complexity, uniting several plates of different sizes to create a sculptural piece that exudes both harmony and originality.

'A.M.O.' vase makes a more three-dimensional statement. Sitting off balance, it creates the illusion of an object in freefall. Flowers fall gently to one side or lean towards each, as in the case of the installation ‘war of the roses’ in which two vases will be set face to face at a distance of 2.5metres, establishing a quiet dialogue.

French Cancan will appear in Paris in September for Maison & Objet.
