Bruce Munro CD Sea

Bruce Munro CD Sea

Bruce Munro calls for one million CDs to create his latest installation in the UK.

We’ve previously covered lighting artist Bruce Munro’s installations on indesignlive.com, but we thought his latest was worth a mention.

UK-based Munro spent eight years in Australia, travelling the country and developing an appreciation for its natural beauty and fascinating light/landscape interactions. It was during his time here that he conceived his latest concept.

With ‘CD Sea’ Munro aims to collect one million discarded CDs to create a massive landscape installation, following on from the success of Field of Light.

The idea came on one Sunday afternoon at Nielsen Park, a Sydney harbour beach. “The light was still strong, like a blanket of shimmering silver light. I had this childish notion that by putting my hand in the sea I was somehow connected to my home in Salcombe, where my father lived.

“I came away from the beach in a very positive frame of mind, at one with the world,” he says.

The first of a series of self-funded installations using discarded materials, ‘CD Sea will be installed at Long Knoll Field in Wiltshire, covering 10 acres. Conceived as an inland sea, the million CDs will create a carpet of reflected light in the day and at night will capture the ‘silvery light of the moon’.

Although Munro has collected a large number of CDs from a recycling plant, he’s calling out for people to send in their discarded CDs to be used in this massive installation.

“If it inspires some smiling faces then the emotional force has been successfully passed on,” he says.

If you’d like to donate your CDs you can contact Munro at info@brucemunro.co.uk.
