Bank On It

Bank On It

This Southbank high-rise has an historical foundation.

Construction is due to begin next week on Melbourne’s new Bank Apartments by architects Urban Design for developers First Delta Group.

The podium of the new tower engages the Art Deco Bank of New South Wales (built in 1932), grounding the modern, angular building aesthetically and historically.

The building will represent the first 6 star energy efficient residential tower in Victoria. The 360 apartments have been designed to minimise solar heat gain and loss and the façade uses eaves and screens to manage solar penetration.

Comprising one, two and three bedroom apartments, the residential tower will also harvest rainwater in roof tanks for use in the complex swimming pool and tarraced gardens.

“At the top of the building a significant angled, cantilevered and separately articulated projection over eight levels serves to break up the overall form, provides further visual interest and a ‘top’ to the building,” says Martyn Tribe – Director of Urban Design Architects.

“The Bank apartment building takes full advantage of its triangular north facing site commanding expansive views of Melbourne’s Central Business District and the Yarra River,” Tribe says.

The Southbank building is due for completion in 2012.
