Announcing NAWIC

Melonie Bayl-Smith is named International Women's Day scholarship award winner.

Melonie Bayl-Smith was today announced the winner of the 2010 National Women in Construction (NAWIC) International Women’s Day Scholarship.

A practicing architect as Sydney Director of Liquid Architecture and architectural lecturer at University of Technology Sydney, Bayl-Smith’s research submission outlined her plan to work towards developing an educational framework for universities in the teaching of construction, including structure, materials and fabrication.

Reviewing construction teaching at universities in Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, UK and US, Bayl-Smith will formulate recommendations for a core construction curriculum and teaching framework in Australian schools of architecture.

She will also develop recommendations for a review of portions of the AACA Competency Standards with particular regard to areas of technical knowledge, including construction and structures.

This is the second year that the NAWIC scholarship has been awarded – NAWIC’s NSW/ACT Chapter President Letitia Turnbull was assisted in the judging of the award by Richard Munao of Corporate Culture, Adam Haddow of SJB Interiors and Penny Craswell of Indesign.

The winner was announced at a breakfast hosted by Corporate Culture’s Sydney showroom.

An official announcement will also be held at the NAWIC Awards for Excellence ceremony in August.
