A rummage in 'The Attic'

A rummage in 'The Attic'

A Queensland lounge bar uses thrifty finds for a domestic fit out.

Cairns’ entertainment precinct just got a whole lot more inviting, thanks to a hospitable domestic interior inspired by the great upstairs.

Three flights up a set of stairs, Brand + Slater Architects took the inspiration for the look of the lounge bar from the high ascent.

With a decor focussed on collected finds, the bar achieves a homely look thanks to the selected items displayed behind cabinets or mounted on the walls.

“The core idea was to design a comfortable and inviting venue that sparked nostalgic memories through the re-use of discarded domestic items, triggering memories of home and reinforcing identity,” said Simone Strushko.

“The philosophy behind ‘The Attic’ was to activate and stimulate patron's sensory experiences by creating a texturally and spatially rich interior, reflecting the clients brief to offer a unique venue in the Cairns entertainment precinct.”

Using thrifted and recycled objects to make up the interior element, weeks were spent rescuing forgotten objects and arranging them on site.

The result is an evocative use of objects,  – given a new lease of life in their new environment, where monetary value is irrelevant and sentimental appeal priceless.
